I firmly believe that our fast-paced society has lost sight of what life is, replacing the concept of intelligent beings moving through simple moments in a beautiful world with deep seeded needs for societal definitions of success, having a severe and detremental impact on the daily needs of our minds and our bodies. Living lives of misguided beliefs. In health and nutrition, on what being healthy means. We sit in chairs to learn, lectured with factory founded techniques on arithmetic and grammar, instead of what being human means, then work in environments non-condusive to healthy habits including balance in movement, nutrition, and enjoying the beautiful little moments, on the journey to a healthy and fulfilled life of where we love outselves, and what we can be. We crave cover-ups and quick fixes, give me drugs and fast food drive-throughs, cover-up my missing nutrients with surgeries and made-up faces. Because we don't know how to do otherwise, and lack the patience when all that matters is the next promotion so I can make my society praise me. How we got here, I cannot say, but I can say we're overdue for large-scale change, change in the ways we see and take care of ourselves, and how we see, what it means to be human.
I take this appoach, because I firmly believe, that to impact the large scale problems and goals we face today, from environmental climate change and space resource extraction, to systemtic inequalities in schools and work, we must first turn inward, and make ourselves better people, from how we live to what we live for.
Hopefully that wasn't too overzealous! When I get pationate while writing, my words kind of turn into a strange form of quick flowing poetry :) Anyways, coming from a computer science and engineering education with an emphasis on public affairs, entrpreneurship, and innovation, I crave to apply my abilities in creative problem solving and entrepreneurial thinking, as well as my deep interests in behavioral psychology and music, technology, and leadership, to influence the daily wellbeing of individuals. The remainder of this interactive resume showcases some of my past and current pursuits, as does the rest of this website. Some I'd like to highlight for emphasis are my education in Innovative and Entrepreneruial thinking, where I took, TA'd, and co-instructed a course based fully around solving large messy problems through a quick and interative innovative and entrepreneurial process. In addition, I co-founded a mental health based start-up called grwth in the past, focusing on natural language processing to create cognitive behavioral therapy based custom journaling prompts. Wellbeing Journey
Throughout the past 4 years or so, I've truly been on a journey to find who I am. A large part of that journey was on wellbeing for myself, and for others. This has included learning mental health first aid for the role of a peer mentor, starting a mental health based company, doing an independent summer study on my college campuses mental health, learning all about nutritional eating and cooking for the benefit of the body, learning about healthy and sustainable movement to keep the body healthy and happy, among other projects and activities.

Grwth: Mental Health Start-Up
Grwth, a web-based journaling platform using natural language processing to detect thought distortions within someone's journal entry, using CBT based reframing technqiues paired with subject analysis to pull out entry subjects and create custom journaling prompts, made to help with the specific thought distortions found.
In February of 2020, I attended the Fort Collins Start-up weekend, joining a diverse team for a weekend of problem investigation, quick market analysis, and solution ideation on a specific problem and solution. The topic was food, drink, and water, so the team went with mental health, of course. The reason was, one member had an idea for a mental health journaling platform, and all of us were interested and excited about the topic. Months later, and three of us were still working on the idea, performing Most Uncertain Scenario Tests to further validate the idea, learning front and backend web development from scratch, and creating mocked-up product demos with Figma wireframing to get feedback before building out the full platform. After around 18 months of progress, the team came to a standstill. We could put all of our effort into machine learning model creation, but the idea still wasn't fully validated for whether it positively effected someone's mental health. We were attempting to partner with a college research professor to creater a HSE, but it was taking much more effort than we thought it would, and created the chicken and egg problem: If we don't have the models, how can we really test it, and if we can't really test the idea, how do we know what models to build? In the end, we couldn't follow-through with the project, lacking a firm direction, and losing time to full-time master's degree programs.

The intention in creating TorinJ.com wasn't in creating a portfolio, but a community of individuals aspiring to grow into the best version of themselves. It was made as a place to showcase my music and stories, and someday the music and stories of others, along with ways to collaborate as a community during the creation process. It was also made as an educational platform on taking care of our bodies and minds, subjects sorely needed in public education. This includes daily nutrition and cooking, movement such as Yoga, and methodologies to help with reframing mindfulness. Music is highlighted on this sight because, for me, it was and is a a wonderful outlet which positively influences my mental wellbeing, and I want it to help others in the same way. It was made to be a place where I can share what I've learned (and someday others can share what they've learned) in the hopes of helping at least one person grow.
